What a Dakota County Court Docket Shows
A docket in Dakota County District Court is built around the Register of Actions. The Register of Actions is the chronological list of events recorded by Court Administration: filings, notices, motions, hearings, orders, sentencing entries, continuances, payments, judgments, and satisfactions. The docket is not the case file; the case file holds the actual documents. The docket is the index that tells the reader which event happened on which date and who entered it.
A docket entry is usually short. A filing entry might read "Complaint filed" with the filing date. An order entry might read "Order Granting Motion to Continue" with the judicial officer's name. Hearing entries tie to the calendar and show the date, time, and type. Dakota County hearings include arraignments, omnibus hearings, pretrial conferences, settlement conferences, motion hearings, trials, sentencings, family motion hearings, probate hearings, juvenile hearings, and many specialty docket sessions tied to the treatment courts.

Dakota County Court Calendar Update Timing
The Dakota County District Court page publishes a specific calendar-update rule. Next-day calendars are posted at 7:00 p.m., and the calendars are updated hourly beginning at 7:00 a.m. during court business hours. The most current daily information is on the printed calendars outside courtrooms and on the electronic display monitors in the public lobbies. The court warns that the calendar does not include every matter and that confidential cases or cases not remotely accessible under the Rules of Public Access are not posted. A reader should not assume an appearance has been canceled simply because it is not visible on the posted calendar.

Confidential Calendar Limits in Dakota County
Several hearing types are not on the public Dakota County docket online. Domestic Abuse/OFP and Harassment Restraining Order matters are not displayed remotely. CHIPS and Juvenile Delinquency Felony 16 case types are excluded from MCRO. Civil commitment public documents are not in MCRO. Pending criminal, traffic, and petty misdemeanor cases without conviction will not return by defendant name remotely, but may return by case number. The court rules at mncourts.gov/rules set the access restrictions that MCRO follows. For records that exist but are not online, the courthouse public terminals or Court Administration are the next step.
Reading a Dakota County Docket by Case Number
The fastest way to pull a Dakota County docket is by case number. The case number returns one record and avoids the wildcard and name-match noise of a person search. Use the Case Search tab, switch to Case Number, paste in the number, and press Find. Open Case Details to read the Register of Actions, hearings, parties, and any public documents. For a known case, the Document Search tab takes just the case number and returns public PDFs tied to that case.
MCRO also notes that case type is not the final outcome. A felony case type can end in a misdemeanor sentence or a dismissal. A civil case type can settle without a judgment. The Register of Actions and the disposition are the right place to read the actual result. For meaning questions, MCRO directs users to local court administration, which for Dakota County is the Judicial Center at 651-377-7180.
Continuances and Remote Hearings in Dakota County
Two operational items on Dakota County dockets matter to most users. The Continuance Policy, effective September 22, 2022, sets how the court considers a request to reschedule. A continuance is not granted unless the court orders it; a party should not assume a hearing is moved simply because a request has been filed. Court Administration publishes a Continuance Request Form on the Dakota County court page, and the request should go in early enough for the court to act before the calendar locks.
The Dakota County court page also notes that a party scheduled for a remote hearing who lacks the technology or internet may visit a court location offering technology for attending remote hearings. That option matters for users far from Hastings, Apple Valley, or West St. Paul, and for users without a private space for the appearance. Confirm the location and the connection method with Court Administration before the hearing day, and bring photo identification.
