Search Dakota County Court Records

Dakota County court records are state District Court records held by the Minnesota Judicial Branch. Most of them are searchable online, and the rest are available through court administration or the local courthouse terminal. A Dakota County court records search starts with the statewide Minnesota Court Records Online system, with the county filter set to Dakota. Civil, criminal, family, probate, and traffic cases use the same portal. Access is governed by Minnesota statute and by the Minnesota Rules of Public Access to Records of the Judicial Branch. Each record category has its own remote-access limits, and certified court documents come from Dakota County District Court Administration.

How to Search Dakota County Court Records

Dakota County court records live in Minnesota Court Records Online, called MCRO. MCRO is a statewide Minnesota Judicial Branch portal covering all 87 counties. The system has four search tabs: Case Search, Document Search, Hearing Search, and Judgment Search. Dakota cases are pulled by setting the court location filter to Dakota. MCRO documents are free to view and download, but they are not certified court records. For certified copies, the user contacts Dakota County District Court Administration at 651-377-7180.

Before a search, the user should know the party's exact name or a case number. MCRO accepts a trailing wildcard after at least two characters of a name field. The Sounds Like option can broaden a search, but wildcards are not allowed with Sounds Like. Date filters cover both Date of Birth and Date Filed, each as a single date or a range. Background-check users should use the Minnesota BCA Public Criminal History Search instead, because MCRO is a case-search tool, not a criminal-history index.

The Minnesota Judicial Branch publishes step-by-step MCRO guides on the access page. The same page lists what is available, what is not, and where the remote-access rule comes from. The Dakota County Find Courts page links the local court divisions for anything that cannot be done remotely.

For most users, the fastest path is the steps below.

  1. Open publicaccess.courts.state.mn.us/CaseSearch and accept the Terms and Conditions.
  2. Pick a tab: Name, Case Number, Citation Number, or Attorney.
  3. Enter the search values. For a name, use Last Name, then First Name. For a case number, paste the full number.
  4. Use Select Specific County Court Locations and select Dakota.
  5. Set Date of Birth or Date Filed if known. Press Find.
  6. Open the Case Details link for the matching result to see the Register of Actions.
  7. For public PDFs of that case, switch to the Document Search tab and enter the case number.
  8. For a certified copy, call Dakota County District Court Administration at 651-377-7180 or visit the Judicial Center in Hastings.

  • Probate, Mental Health, Adoption - wills, estates, guardianship, conservatorship, trusts, civil commitment, adoption. Handled by the Probate Division at the Judicial Center, 651-377-7974.

Dakota County court records juvenile court statute

Juvenile records are governed by Minn. Stat. 260B.171. The statute is the reason juvenile delinquency and CHIPS records do not appear in many remote searches.

Public Access Framework for Dakota County Court Records

Two regimes control access. The Minnesota Government Data Practices Act, Chapter 13, governs county government records. The Minnesota Rules of Public Access to Records of the Judicial Branch govern court records. Both default to public access. Both list classes of data that are private, confidential, or otherwise not public. Minn. Stat. 13.03 sets the inspection-free rule and the 25-cents-per-page cap for the first 100 black-and-white letter or legal pages of public data. The Judicial Branch rules apply to court files and were the basis for MCRO's remote-access restrictions.

Anyone can request a public Dakota County court record. Dakota County District Court Administration accepts walk-in, mail, phone, and in some cases email requests. ID rules vary by record type. Certified copies carry an extra fee. Older documents may not be online; for filings before July 1, 2015 in most case types, the user should call Court Administration.

Note: MCRO records are not certified by the Minnesota Judicial Branch; for certified Dakota County court documents, contact Court Administration at 651-377-7180.

Records That Are Sealed or Confidential in Dakota County

Several categories of Dakota County court records are not displayed remotely or are not public at all. Domestic Abuse/OFP and Harassment Restraining Order cases are not displayed on MCRO. CHIPS and Juvenile Delinquency Felony 16 case types are excluded from MCRO. Public documents in civil commitment cases are not in MCRO. Pending criminal, traffic, and petty misdemeanor cases without a conviction will not return by defendant name remotely, although a case-number search may still find them. Adoption records are confidential under Minn. Stat. 259.61.

To view a record that is sealed by court order, the requester usually has to file a motion in the case asking for access. Expunged records remain sealed from the public under Chapter 609A, but the Minnesota Judicial Branch notes that law enforcement, the FBI, immigration authorities, and other public officials can still see them for certain purposes. The expungement help page at mncourts.gov/help-topics/criminal-expungement walks through both petition and automatic paths.

Federal Court Records That Touch Dakota County

Federal cases involving Dakota County residents or businesses sit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota, not in Dakota County District Court. Federal records use PACER for searchable case access and CM/ECF for filings. CourtListener is a free supplemental source for many federal opinions and dockets, though PACER remains the official record.

Dakota County court records CourtListener federal

CourtListener publishes federal court opinions and many docket items at no cost. It is a useful starting point for federal case research, but a certified federal court document still has to come from PACER or the issuing federal court clerk.
